Nike Basketball is turning the clock back to the late ’90s with the return of one of its most unmistakable court classics: the Nike Air Bakin SP OG 'Varsity Red'.

Introduction:
Originally introduced in 1997, the bold silhouette is set to make another comeback on September 28, 2026, giving a new generation of sneakerheads the chance to experience one of Nike’s most distinctive basketball designs.
The Air Bakin was never designed to blend into the background. Its aggressive panelled construction, fiery color blocking and unmistakable ’90s attitude quickly made it a standout on the hardwood. Tim Hardaway became closely associated with the silhouette, while fellow NBA star Mitch Richmond also laced up the Bakin. Off the court, Kevin Garnett helped push the model further into the spotlight through a Nike commercial.
But the Bakin’s story isn’t without controversy. The original 1997 release featured an 'Air' graphic on the heel that was widely interpreted as resembling the Arabic word for 'Allah'. Following backlash from the Islamic community, Nike recalled the shoes and subsequently replaced the graphic with a conventional Nike Air logo.

Design Details:
Fast-forward to 2026, and the Varsity Red colorway is ready for its long-awaited return. Red leather dominates the upper, contrasted by black detailing across the base, mudguard, and midsole. Silver branding adds a metallic hit, while bright yellow laces inject another burst of color. The updated pair is expected to feature Nike Air branding rather than the original heel graphic.
The Air Bakin has enjoyed several retro moments since its debut, including returns in 2007 and 2014, while Supreme later reworked the silhouette in 2023.
Release Info:
Now, almost three decades after its original arrival, the Nike Air Bakin SP 'OG' is bringing that unapologetic '90s basketball energy back to the streets. Expect the pair to release on September 28, 2026, via Nike and select retailers for $170.
